Things to consider when choosing LED garden lights

IP rating

As we have already mentioned, IP-rated lights are ideal for gardens as they will continue to work in bad weather conditions.

IP stands for Ingress Protection, which stands for How to Protect Lamps from Water and Solid Objects. It consists of two numbers, the first number tells you how well the device is protected against solid objects, and the second number tells you how well the device protects the water. The higher the number, the greater the protection.

For solid objects, the rating can be between 0 (unprotected) and 6 (completely dustproof), while for water, the rating is from 0 (unprotected) to 8 (completely impermeable, suitable for immersion in water up to 1 meter deep).

For outdoor areas, look for lighting fixtures with an IP rating of at least 44. This means it prevents objects up to 1 mm in size from entering (hence most soil and dirt) and can withstand splashing.

If possible, look for a lamp with an IP65 rating. They offer excellent protection and can withstand even the most extreme British weather, even with directional sprays such as hoses. Ratings above 65 and 66 are rare and are only really needed if the device will be exposed to a lot of water.
